CSS Cheat sheet

27.03.2005

CoreCSS is one of those web sites which everyone should store in favourites because of its usefulness, simplicity and, in my case, because of its necessity.

CoreCSS is a fantastic website where we can find a solution to any problem related to CSS web design. This generalised description might lead us to think that CoreCSS offers only CSS manuals, examples, tricks, etc. However, this would be underestimating what can be found. It’s true that CoreCSS offers a list of examples, but these are organized in such a way that they are of real use for learning purposes. They’re grouped in chapters and offer just what’s needed at any given moment, direct and to the point and without any superfluous code which makes it more difficult to resolve the problem at hand.

What’s more CoreCSS has a database of all CSS properties, so that only a couple of mouse clicks away, we can find out which property is needed, what that property really does, how it is used and what other uses are possible.

Another great idea which is provided is a master CSS compatibility chart, with respect to different web browsers, so that at any given moment we can check if the property we have just applied can be seen not only in IE 5.5 but also in IE 6 or in Netscape Navigator 4 in Mac. From the same table we can access a description of each property and a detailed description of each web browser and the properties supported.
Many more useful tools are at hand, a standard colour chart, a list of useful CSS links, news items about CSS, etc.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this site which is without doubt, a great discovery and a site I’m sure I’ll be revisiting in the future.

Harmonic colours for your Web

27.03.2005

Yesterday we published a post titled “Web Colour Palette” in which we noted the importance of the ideal selection of the colours for a website.

Many of you may already know the harmonic colour generator colormatch 5k and based on this tool is colormatch remix which allows us to generate the colour web palette in the format of photoshop and illustrator.

Web Colour Palette

26.03.2005

We all know the importance of web site colour choice. The choice of colour provides us with some prior information about the characteristics of the web site and the webmaster should dedicate some time to the selection of the colours used.

Follow this link to find a flash application which will help with colour selection.

Huey is one of those tools which every web designer needs at hand. An HTML colour code generator which can convert RGB values to hexadecimal and vice versa. You can use the colour selector to select colours from any part of the screen. Other options include a colour scheme, HTML insertion, favourite colours, safe palette and much more.

PagePainter is an original tool that allows you to create different colour schemes for your website and try each one until you decide on your preference.

WAMP Installation

06.02.2005

If you want to quickly and easily install Apache, MySQL and PHP under Windows you can use the AppServ installation package.

AppServ 2.5.2 will install:

• PHP 5.0.2
• Apache 1.3.33
• MySQL 4.1.7
• Zend Optimizer 2.5.5
• phpMyAdmin 2.6.0-pl2
• Perl 5.8.4

During the installation you will be asked for the host name (you should leave what appears automatically “Server Administrator”)

You will then be asked for the user name and a password in order to gain access to the MySQL data bases. Make sure to make a note of this information as you will need it later on.

Once installation has finished restart the computer.

In order to execute Apache you must access the AppServ/Apache Control Server/Apache Monitor group.

Now check if everything works correctly by writing in the address bar of the web browser http://localhost.
You should now see The AppServ Open Project - 2.5.2 for Windows page.

From there we can access PHPMyAdmin by clicking on phpMyAdmin Database Manager Version 2.6.0-pl2

Two error messages will appear. To correct this we must edit the c:AppServwwwphpMyAdminconfig.inc.php file and make the following modifications:

At line 39:
$cfg[’PmaAbsoluteUri’] = (!empty($_SERVER[’HTTPS’]) ? ‘https’ : ‘http’) . ‘://’
. $_SERVER[’HTTP_HOST’]
. (!empty($_SERVER[’SERVER_PORT’]) ? ‘:’ . $_SERVER[’SERVER_PORT’] : ”)
. substr($_SERVER[’PHP_SELF’], 0, strrpos($_SERVER[’PHP_SELF’], ‘/’)+1);

At line 86:
$cfg[’Servers’][$i][’auth_type’] = ‘http’; // Método de autentificación
$cfg[’Servers’][$i][’user’] = ”; // Usuario MySQL
$cfg[’Servers’][$i][’password’] = ”; // Contraseña MySQL

And now you’re ready to develop server side web applications!!

The webmaster’s bill (improved)

16.01.2005

In September we displayed an empiric model that facilitated the calculation of budgets for web development. That model was based on the following expression:

PRICE PROJECT = (((CMO+ MP)/160) x H) + EAP

CMO. Costs of monthly operation.
MP. Monthly pay.
H. Hours dedicated to the project.
EAP. Expenses associated to the project.

Here i present the new formula to you:

PRICE PROJECT = ((((CMO+ MP)/160) x H) + EAP) x COEF

The corrector coefficient COEF is obtained by means of the following expression:

COEF = TC x DP x DiP

Where:

  1. TC is the corrector coefficient of Type of Client (New = 0.9, Habitual = 1 or Preferred = 0.95).
  2. DP is the corrector coefficient of the Duration of the Project (Short = 1, Medium = 0,95 or Long = 0,9).
  3. DiP is the coefficient corrector of the Difficulty of the Project (Low = 0,9, Medium = 0,95, High = 1).

You can download a tool developed by BdW, that facilitates the calculation of the budget, by only introducing the project data. Along with version 1.1, you will download version 1.2 developed by our friend Alexander Archila Celis.

Translated from the original post. Versión en español.

We already know P2P utils and the polemic they are causing because of the new laws introduced. Because of this, maybe i’m promoving an illegal practice introducing you to this new application. However, illegal or not, i thought it would be something worthy for investigate.

Peer2mail is the first software that allow us storing and sharing files through any account of any web-mail service, as Gmail, Walla! or Yahoo for example.

Peer2mail divides the file we want to share on pieces of the maximum size that our mail provider allows and encrypt them. In addition, the program automatically compress this pieces in a zip file format for saving space inside your mail account.

Download of peer2mail is completely free, although it’s only available for Windows XP, 2000 and NT, the installation file’s size is only 0,9Mb and is Spyware-free.

BdW in English

11.01.2005

In order to offer a better service to all of our readers, we have decided to bring BdW to other people and languages. Today we begin to translate our more visited posts to the british language, trying to be more useful for everybody. Forgive our low level and the possible mistakes we could make, we’ll try not doing too bad, but if we´re not perfect writing in spanish…

Our first idea was using Google Translator, but the results were too poor and we finally decided making an effort and doing it ourselves, so we know that results aren’t going to be much better, but we are going to try.

Translated posts will appear as new posts over following weeks. Thank you for your understanding;)
